Measuring and Reporting According to the TNFD Framework

We are dependent on nature, but today, the value of biodiversity is rarely made visible in society or in companies' financial results. TNFD (Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures) is a guiding and newly developed framework that highlights this connection, helping entities measure and report their impact on biodiversity.

An organization’s impact on and dependency on biodiversity is assessed from four aspects: dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities. IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute assists in identifying and assessing risks related to these aspects using the TNFD framework.

By applying the TNFD framework methodology, a company can be guided in analyzing and evaluating its dependencies and impacts on nature. The method can also help entities and companies develop strategies, action plans, and reports to communicate their progress. The purpose of TNFD is to concretely link the goals of the global Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework, agreed upon at the UN COP 15 meeting, with existing and future reporting frameworks, such as the EU's European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

IVL also works to guide organizations in using other tools for measuring biodiversity and to support other crucial elements of strategic sustainability work.
